The future is electric!
Execs spark a rising demand for EVs in the car rental market
Australians are embracing the idea of electric vehicles (EVs). Whether you’re talking Tesla, Nissan, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Hyundai, Kia or even new brands like Rivian (with a waitlist stretching to 2024) and BYD (who hope to offer more than six EV models to Australian customers by 2023), they are more than ready to get in the driver’s seat.
And it’s a global trend. According to the World Economic Forum, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) hit 6.6 million in 2021 – almost doubling from the previous year. To put it in perspective, if you go back just 10 years to 2012 when the EV market was starting to gain momentum, 130,000 cars were sold worldwide that year. Today, that number is sold every single week. Pretty impressive in anyone’s book.
It’s also trend that we’re seeing in the car rental market.
Sharmin Lubonski (pictured below right), Assistant Manager of Flight Centre Business Travel’s store in George St, Sydney, says the team has noticed a marked increase in demand for EVs – particularly from C-suite and senior executives who tend to opt for something at the top end of the market.
“There has been increasing activity in this area of the travel market for a while now, with sustainability goals front and centre for most companies in 2022,” says Sharmin. “But more than that, people also have their own principles and non-negotiables, and if they’re driving an EV at home, chances are that when they’re travelling for business, they want to rent one too.”
Such is the demand for electronic vehicles that Sharmin now asks FCBT customers if they’re interested in hiring an EV because they already have one – or if they’ve tried driving one before and liked the experience. “Many of our customers actually have an EV or Tesla themselves,” comments Sharmin. “And those who don’t, would really like to take one for a spin.”
In other words, choosing an EV as your next car rental is the perfect way to ‘try before you buy’.
ReCHARGE YOUR WEEKEND
Exclusive to Flight Centre Business Travel, we’ve partnered with SIXT to give 3 lucky customers the chance to WIN a Tesla experience* and e-lectrify your next weekend away.
“We’re incredibly busy right now,” says Frances.
“We are advising to book well in advance where possible, as at the moment many clients are looking for last minute bookings and this can end in disappointment. It is great news for the industry, and it’s exciting to see our team kept busy moving fleet as pockets of demand continue to pop up across the country.”
Happily, SIXT has one of the largest fleets of electric cars for rent in Australia, and you can pick up an MG ZSEV or Tesla Model 3 at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth airports. It is undoubtedly one of the best ways to see what all the fuss is about (and reduce your carbon footprint while travelling).
“It’s definitely worthwhile,” says Sharmin.
“An ever-expanding network of fast-charging stations across Australia means range or charging anxiety is a thing of the past and, even better, SIXT has partnered with Chargefox which means EV renters have access to free charging across the Chargefox network."
Today, customers can experience the ease, handling and capabilities of an EV firsthand and FCBT booking data shows a steady rise in enquiries and bookings. And no wonder.
Not only can you satisfy your curiosity; try before you buy (and with each state now offering different incentives for people to buy an electric car, it’s an appealing prospect); and nail your sustainability colours to the mast – but you can also ensure that your company’s ethos and sustainability goals are built into every aspect of your travel program.
